McGwire Traded for Green…and Gummi Bears

FLINT- In a trade that sent shockwaves throughout Henry Allen Middle School, Brian Didriekson traded away a 1998 Mark McGwire Bowman Chrome #5 to Timothy Laedler for a 1996 Topps Sean Green AS and an undisclosed number of Gummi Bears.

The trade of a card from Mark McGwires's record breaking year for one of a star in the making, yet from the year following his rookie card year, is considered risky by most other card collector's on the playground. But it is exactly this kind of trade that has earned Didriekson a reputation as a savvy wheeler-dealer in the high stakes collector card world.

"I wouldn't put anything by Bri," said Tony Childress, "but even for him this is a risky move. Clearly on just financial terms it is a loser. So Bri must be banking on the ability of Green's cards to appreciate considerably, because I don't see McGwire's cards getting any less valuable anytime soon."

Didreiekson explained the move, "I think the McGwire cards have had their run for now. As for Sean green, now that he is in L.A. his exposure will be much greater then in Toronto. Although I wouldn't exactly call him unknown, I think his lack of visibility has made traders reluctant to pick him up."

"But if Green has the kind of career I think he will, and in Los Angeles, then he could be in Derek Jeter or A-Rod, in terms of card desirability, territory very quickly. And I really like Gummi Bears…a lot""

Although unavailable for comment, several playground witnesses noted that Laedler was extremely pleased with the trade telling everyone that he had "taken Bri." One of Laedler's close associates, Aaron Vickers, remained skeptical, "I just don't know. Timmy normally doesn't make a big deal about it, and you can't really blame him, since a 98 McGwire doesn't come around everyday. But after Bri pulled off that Juan Gonzalez deal last fall I am not sure what to make of it all."
