Elliott's Kidney Threatens to Sit Out Playoffs
|
SAN ANTONIO, TX - What just a few days ago was one of the feel-good stories of the year is threatening to turn into yet another bitter disagreement over money in the sporting world. This time, Sean Elliott's new kidney is threatening to sit out the playoffs unless the Spurs negotiate an extension on its contract.
It was just last week Thursday when Sean Elliot returned from a kidney transplant to play for the Spurs in a victory over the Atlanta Hawks, much to the wonderment of both the sporting and the medical worlds. Elliott's return seemed to invigorate the defending champion Spurs.
But in a short press release issued by Elliott's new kidney's agent, Tony Fontenelli, the kidney said that it felt that it was not fully appreciated and that it was only seeking what was "fair and hopefully the fans will understand."
The Spur's said only that they did not negotiate on a body part by body part basis and they also did not negotiate contracts during the season. Many, however, feel that if the Spurs wish to keep a healthy Sean Elliott for the playoffs then they will have to deal with the kidney sooner rather then later.
This puts the Spurs in a difficult salary cap situation, but Elliott said he would be willing to move some of his salary so the team could sign the kidney. "The money is nice, but I think I am better player and can help the team more if I actually have the services of the kidney."
One Spurs fan expressed the disillusionment felt by many fans, "I thought we were all set and then the greed thing comes in. I appreciate all the kidney has done, but this just seems like blackmail to me. I hope they work it out."
