This Year's Derby A "Real Horse Race"
|
LEXINGTON, KY - With the Kentucky Derby only a week away experts can agree on only one thing, that this year's Run for the Roses will be extremely close. "It's too close to call," said Vincent Morgenstern, bookmaker for MGM Grand sport book in Las Vegas. "A real horse race at this point."
"I have to say this will definitely be a contest in which equines attempt to circle the track faster at the behest of their jockeys," predicted Morgenstern.
Others agree, "A race with horses," was how Julian Berks, attending his twenty-first consecutive Kentucky Derby, described what he expected out of next Saturday's contest.
Instead of one favorite, several have emerged as favorites, including Santa Anita Derby winner The Deputy and High Yield, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes.
"Going in those were too close to call. They were real horse races, much like the Kentucky Derby," noted Morgenstern. "Those horses distinguished themselves as being able to run fast, but several horse which run fast will be entered."
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown and is the most prestigious race of the year. It seems that each year's contest is so close that predictions rarely stray form declarations that they will be a real horse race.
"Yeah, pretty much every year it is neither an auto race nor a foot race, but a horse race, real close. I don't see this year as being any different."
Indeed predicting a horse race and in fact a horse winner is about the only safe bet, as every Derby since it's inception has included a horse of some kind in the winner's circle. A fact not lost on Berks.
"I know this year, like last, I will bet on a horse. It's just that at this point I am not sure which one."
