Overused Cliches Are Being Underused
|
As we hit the NBA and NHL post-seasons in full stride, and with the baseball season well underway, it is becoming quite evident that overused tired cliches are not being overused enough. Sayings such as "We're taking it one game at a time" and "We left it all on the court" are in danger of almost being in danger of disappearing.
Already we have seen the virtual extinction of the overused expression, "giving one hundred and ten percent". How many more hackneyed, grating overused expression are we going to lose to being just routine, underused vernacular before something is done?
The athletes have a responsibility, whether they like it or not, to overuse these expressions. "There is no 'I' team", "The breaks didn't go our way", and "We gave it all we had but came up a little short" are just some of the more overused and reliably trite expressions athletes could incorporate more and more into their post and pre-game comments.
We shouldn't have to enumerate these piddling throwaway lines for them. They should come naturally to any athlete who is living up to their responsibilities. As fans we pay our money and make the professional athletes into icons, the least they could do in return is continue to overuse these banalities. These reliable warmed-over expressions are the fans connection to the modern athlete and must be preserved.
Hearing "As long as we win I don't care about stats" too much is never enough.
