Dodger 19 Seek Freedom, Justice, Cap
|
LOS ANGELES, CA - Activist ballplayers for the Los Angeles Dodgers say they are being unfairly prosecuted by Major League Baseball. Calling themselves the Dodger 19, the players said they were only sticking up for their beliefs when they clashed with Cubs fans.
"I was just being all peaceful, man, when some guy wants to oppress me and take my hat," explained Chad Kreuter, catcher for the Dodgers. "I'm like, 'no way man', and I go to get my cap back."
Other Dodgers say it wasn't about the cap, it was about their principled beliefs that they should have the freedom to wear a cap. "It's about freedom…freedom and the basic rights as a person to wear a cap."
When Kreuter went after the fan to get his cap, several of his teammates went into to try and help. According to baseball, however, their presence only caused more unrest.
"We understand their position, but the blame lies with them," explained Frank Robinson who meted out 84 games worth of suspensions over the incident.
While the Dodger 19 understand they bear some responsibility, they certainly don't believe in the severity of the punishment.
"Man, that ain't right. No justice for the blue man!" shouted Dodger 19 supporter Patrick O'Leary, who was gathered outside Dodger Stadium with a swelling crowd of supporters for the Dodger 19.
"What about that fan that took his had and put all that bad karma in there? What about him?"
There were concerns the crowd would grow violent, but they remained peaceful, chanting "Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! Drunken Cubs fans who steal a guys hat and then run away like a cowards have got to go." And singing "Give Peace A Chance."
Manager of the Dodger 19, Davey Johnson, expressed his feelings on the matter, "Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! Those suspensions were too harsh!"
The Dodger 19 have appealed the decision and for now are still playing baseball. But as one of the members of the 19, Gary Sheffield said, "Baseball may say we are wrong, but we know in our hearts what we did was right. I will fight always for freedom and to get our damn caps back."
