NFL Considers Suing MLB Over Football Scores
|
NEW YORK, NY - The increased scoring in Major League Baseball has caught the eye of the National Football League. The NFL is apparently concerned over the baseball scores, claiming that they are too similar to football scores. The NFL offices announced that they are considering legal action against Major League Baseball but have not made any final decision at this time.
The NFL's concern was piqued several Sundays ago when several games ended in football-like scores. The NFL cited three games in particular from June 18, Oakland 21 Kansas City 3, Chicago 17 New York 4, and Colorado 19 Arizona 2.
"We were concerned when we saw these scores, and on a Sunday no less. We feel that scores like this are the sole province of the National Football League at the professional level," said NFL Assistant Director of Operations Cecil Conley. "We are currently investigating other instances of similar scores and our attorneys will determine what legal action may be necessary."
Major League Baseball would not comment except to say in a press release that their position was that "all scores were in the public domain and any lawsuit would be devoid of merit."
The NFL may have a case according to legal experts.
"It is not clear what cause the NFL may have, they clearly do not have any patent protection on the scores. However, they may have a case for copyright protection, " explained Harold Nephee of the Pepperdine Law School.
"However, if baseball can prove that they had these high scores prior to the establishment of these scores as a practice by the NFL then it will be difficult for the NFL to prove they have any kind of proprietary use for them."
According to Conley the NFL is not so concerned about the legal issues as it is to bringing attention to the fact that "these baseball scores are a freaking joke."
