Betsy DeVos has been at the forefront of a movement that seeks to fundamentally change the way education in America operates. Betsy DeVos, now the Secretary of Education for President Trump, has been an open advocate for educational choice at every level of the United States government. As a private citizen operating out of Michigan, Betsy DeVos and her husband have been almost single-handedly pushing forward school choice as a core concept of conservative reform. Educational choice is, of course, all about re-directing federal funds toward the support of private educational institutions such as religious schools and charter school.
Betsy DeVos has spent more than 30+ years working to make educational choice a mainstream conservative position and now she is finally having some success. As the operating Secretary of Education, DeVos brings with her years of experience working on both a grassroots and nationwide level. DeVos has spent time serving as a chairman on her own foundation, the DeVos Family Foundation, will serving on the board of several national committees. Those committees that DeVos has chaired include the American Federation for Childre as well as the Alliance for School Choice. DeVos has advocated for state-level legislative changes while also pushing for federal involvement.
As the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos will be in a place where she can begin to enact the kind of sweeping national change that she has always dreamed of. DeVos will be fighting an uphill battle, however, as educational choice is almost completely relegated to a right-wing position. DeVos will have to go toe-to-toe with political rivals from the other side of the aisle in order to get things done. When Betsy DeVos was first nominated for her position, her lack of political experience was seen as a large detractor. In the intervening years since her confirmation via the U.S. Senate, DeVos has only acclimated herself more to her work.
Now, Betsy DeVos is establishing herself as a powerful force in Washington’s political climate. DeVos has already gone toe-to-toe with President Trump regarding the stripping of Obama-era protections for transgendered students at school. DeVos has also met face-to-face with prominent leaders of teacher’s unions throughout the country. In the meetings that DeVos has been able to schedule with the teacher’s unions, she has managed to impress union figureheads from across the aisle. Randi Weingarten, leader of the American Federation of Teachers, was quick to call DeVos both determined and dangerous.
Betsy DeVos is a devout reformer who comes from a small Dutch neighborhood in Michigan. Raised to change the world, DeVos now has the President and the entire party behind her. The next couple of years will decide just how far Betsy DeVos can go in reforming America’s education system.
