Everett Politely Removes Helmet
|
NEW YORK, NY - Carl Everett displayed an uncanny amount of sportsmanship when he kindly removed his batting helmet before head butting umpire Ron Kulpa.
"That was classy," commented Mike Piazza who was catching for the Mets and was right there when the incident happened. "I mean he could have easily tried to head butt him with the helmet on and that would have been really ugly. As it was he did the right thing and removed the helmet first."
Kulpa could not be reached for comment, but anonymous sources said the umpire was "grateful to Everett for showing such thoughtfulness and foresight."
When Everett and Kulpa got into a disagreement over Evertt's stance the two debated the point in close quarters. When Everett realized his helmet was posing a real threat to damge the nose and or eyes of the umpire he quickly removed it.
It wasn't until the helmet was well clear that Everett provided the head-butting.
Red Sox Manager Jimy Williams, "Those batting helmets are hard, so it could have caused some real damage. The brim is also kind of sharp, right, so who knows. Carl did a nice job to avoid that dangerous situation."
Especially noteworthy was Everett's clear thinking in what was a somewhat heated and emotional moment.
"Carl was not too agreeable with the umpire that was clear," said Piazza. "For a lot of guys they just start losing control and that is a dangerous situation. I've got to hand it to Carl he showed some real class. The ump is lucky he got into an argument with such an intelligent and thoughtful guy."
