His name is Joe Arpaio and he is a former Maricopa County Sheriff. He wreaked havoc on the Latino community and prison population within his jurisdiction of Arizona. Arpaio was sheriff of Maricopa County from 1993 to 2017. His jurisdiction covered major cities within Phoenix that included Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale and Goodyear.
During Arpaio’s tenure as sheriff he racially profiled Latino people, he frequently locked people up on trumped up charges and he wrongfully arrested people without having a legal reason for putting them in jail. Arpaio also ran his infamous tent jail city back in the 90s and he tortured prisoners. These were just some of the major offenses committed by Arpaio. In 2015 Arpaio’s ways caught up with him. He was found in contempt of court for racial profiling. He had violated a 2011 court order to stop this practice. Apparently, he did not comply. The U.S. Department of Justice decided to follow through with charging the sheriff with this court violation.
Arpaio even admitted that he was guilty of some wrong doings in terms of racial profiling. While many people thought he was going to jail for his crimes, the former sheriff was never put behind bars.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are two newspaper owners in the Phoenix area. They were the co-owners of the Phoenix Times News. In October of 2007 both of the men were arrested in the middle of the night by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
They were arrested by the sheriff simply because they started to bring his wrong doings to the public’s eye. The men reported the sheriff’s practices and at the time his many alleged crimes.
The sheriff did not like being exposed. He then trumped up some evidence and subpoenas to have the two men arrested. Larkin and Lacey both went to jail but were quickly released once the public found out about this incident.
The two men knew their rights as citizens had been violated. They eventually sued the Maricopa County sheriff’s office and by 2011 they had won a 3.5 million dollar settlement. The men used most of this money to start the Frontera Fund which protects immigrant and migrant people from racism, discrimination and legal issues.
Lacey and Larkin, personally wanted to see Sheriff Arpaio locked away behind bars. However, this did not happen. Sheriff Arpaio received a surprise pardon for his crimes from President Donald Trump. This pardoned really took everyone off guard including the U.S. Department of Justice. Larkin and Lacey realized that Sheriff Arpaio manipulated his way out of going to jail.
According to Larkin and Lacey, Sheriff Arpaio wisely supported Trump when most people thought he would never make it into office. The former sheriff had a large support base of Republican voters.
He used his influence to get them to vote for Trump when he was campaigning for office. Trump did not find anything wrong with Arpaio’s actions. So, he pardoned him.
Larkin knew that Arpaio was a lot of things but he wasn’t a fool. He understood that Arpaio made sure he had Trump backing him by getting him votes. This in turn made Trump sympathetic to his cause. In the end Larkin and Lacey realize that Joe Arpaio did not get a victory out of this situation. He is no longer the sheriff of Maricopa County.
